Kabuli Chickpeas are lighter coloured, larger and with a smoother coat, mainly grown in the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, Northern Africa, South America and Indian Subcontinent. The name means “from Kabul” in Hindi and Urdu, and this variety was thought to come from Kabul, Afghanistan when it was introduced to India in the 18th century.
India is the largest producer of Kabuli Chick Peas in the world. Mature chick peas can be cooked & eaten cold in salads , cooked in stews and ground into chick pea flour. Chickpeas can be classified with its size/count e.g. 42-44, 44-46, 46-48, 58-60 etc.
Pigeon pea also known as red gram, tur, toor or arhar in India, is actually a grain legume (pulse) and not a pea as the name suggests. The major production of this crop is concentrated around the Indian subcontinent and East Africa. The major product produced from the pigeon peas is the split pulse, known as dal in India.
